| Term: | forest dieback |
| Definition: | Death of groups of neigboring trees rather than isolated trees dying in an otherwise green forest matrix. (Source: DENDRO, 1995) |
| Notes: | The term dieback is not applied to deaths where the cause is fire or flooding. (Mueller-Dombois, 1987).
It is used as a synonym of "forest decline" by many authors.

The term dieback may be used in the context of individual trees to denote the death of branches in the upper crown.
