Definition: Death of groups of neigboring trees rather than isolated trees dying in an otherwise green forest matrix.

Notes:The term dieback is not applied to deaths where the cause is fire or flooding. (Mueller-Dombois, 1987). <br />It is used as a synonym of "forest decline" by many authors.<br /><br />The term dieback may be used in the context of individual trees to denote the death of branches in the upper crown. Branches that have died through suppression are not normally included as dieback.
